Friday insights: find inspiration and fresh perspectives

When you’re stuck, out of inspiration, or in a VERY bad mood, the best thing you can do is get yourself moving to the nearest art museum or gallery. That’s exactly what I did today, and now I’m writing this Friday newsletter with some truly brilliant insights on how to come up with fresh ideas and find inspiration.

Yes, digital drawing plays a part in this too! Speaking of which - in the museum today, I designed and sketched a collage. I took pictures of the furniture pieces I loved, developed a harmonious composition (using my own composition rules, which I shared in the first video of my design and drawing challenge HERE), and voilà - the final result!

Since we’re on the topic of collages, I’m hosting a LIVE webinar! We’ll be designing and drawing a realistic texture moodboard like the one below. We’ll also dive into the professional uses of digital drawing, how to build confidence and attract new clients, how to leverage AI for creative and marketing work, hear inspiring success stories from our ASDB students, and so much more! It’s LIVE, hosted only once, and it’s free - register HERE.

One more super important reminder before we dive back into inspiration:

Today marks Day 4 of our Design and Drawing Challenge I mentioned earlier. And this webinar is the PERFECT next step to take your skills to the next level and expand your digital skill set. Here’s the link to register again.

Also, the early bird offer for my signature drawing course, 3D Drawing for Business, Design, and Life, ends in just over 24 hours and will never return. Make sure to secure your spot HERE. Once you enter your name and email, you’ll receive a message with the exclusive early bird offer (not available to the public).

This is what you’ll be drawing in the course:

Alright, that’s it for reminders. Now, let’s talk about drawing on the go!

When I travel, I draw on my iPad mini (512 GB, purchased last fall). At home, I use my iPad Pro 12" (1 TB). My go-to brushes? Pencil, pen, and markers.

When you’re swamped with work and frustrated because there’s no time for personal projects, I have a hack to help you break free. First, create a list of things you truly enjoy or want to try - things you’d do if you had zero responsibilities. Super important: let your soul write freely. Don’t analyze - just write EVERYTHING.

Example from my own life: I signed up for indoor climbing classes starting next week. Do I have time for that? Hell no. Do I want to try it? HELL YES! So I found time - two evenings a week. Netflix will still be there during other time slots, but THIS? I’ve wanted to try it for so long. Want to sing? Sign up for singing classes. Want to dance? DANCE!

Next: When things feel unbearable, open that list and do ANY of those activities, even if just for 10 minutes (trust me, you’ll want to keep going longer). That was me today, spontaneously heading to the museum. I love visiting museums because staying active and exploring sparks new ideas and fresh perspectives, which then just flow naturally into my mind.

Since most of you reading this are creatives, we also need to communicate our ideas with the world - not just keep them in our heads. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where iPad drawing and designing come into play. I’ll never stop talking about the flexibility and freedom they bring. Experimenting is KEY to exploring and getting closer to our big vision.

How are we supposed to grow by sitting at home, thinking, “I’m not good or talented enough,” and waiting for inspiration to magically strike? Ideas and resources only come when we’re active, learning from other experts (not me waving at you from my desk, iPad in hand, looking forward to drawing with you at my Academy lol). Get out there. Leave your comfort zone.

This idea - that inspiration comes from action - is also explored in many self-development podcasts. Just listen to your inner voice and gut - they already know the way.

Happy creating ✨
